Samael was born the son of a wandering gypsy woman, whos name has been long forgotten by her son. The child was brought into the world in a gypsy caravan, wandering all over the many kingdoms. When Samael was but two years old his mothers caravan was raided by bandits. Samael's mother begged and pleaded for the men to let her child live, "Please, let Samael live! The McNikle name must carry on!" The bandits slew his mother, however they kept the boy to be sold as a slave as he grew. All did not go according to the bandits plans however, at the age of five the bandits hideout had been overrun by Lands End heroes. A kindly old priest who had been apart of the group took pity upon the boy, and took him as his own son.

Upon receiving the title of Lord, Samael sent his oath-brother Kreon in search of magic tomes. Now that he was a noble, Samael had turned his attentions to attaining a higher understanding of the magical arts. He would accomplish this by collecting magic books, studying them, learning from them. Soon he received word from his brother, word that in the south there was a tome of great power. His brother could not retrieve the tome on its own, so he asked for Samael to come himself. With a heavy heart Samael left the frigid northlands, and ventured to the village of Ashberne. Upon arriving in Ashberne, Samael and Kreon discovered that the village was populated by females; almost exclusively. The few men in the society were servants, however Kreon and Samael were treated as guests; soon earning the trust of the Ashbernite women. The village of Ashberne had always had a problem with warring barbarian tribes and monsters. Ogres in the area were attracted to the females in such a way that they would even attempt to kidnap many that they came across, however the women were skilled in the art of war; and thus were able to more than easily fend off the Ogres and bandit raiders. Whilst the presence of Kreon and McNikle upset many of the warrior women, they were tolerated and eventually welcomed into the women's society as equals.
