Zell Zanendell is a tribal, gender fluid Mesoamerican once belonging to a tribe called Fuegoterranoches. In youth, Zell's role in his tribe became oriented toward priesthood in their fire worshiping cult. Having a natural gift of fire magic such as the ability to speak the language of fire and scry in flames, the elders of the tribe promoted Zell to more important roles in rituals. Though there was momentum to Zell's ascensions in the ranks of priests, the elders kept his insatiable ambitions at bay by forbidding him to perform higher forms of fire magic. At an auspicious time, Zell went to perform magic in a ritual fire pit in secret. The aim of the ritual was to summon a flame elemental. Zell's channeling was too weak; therefore, in an act of desperation, Zell offered is blood to the flames to enhance the magical intention. Consequently, by doing so, the intention of the ritual infused with his body and soul transmuting Zell into an elemental, a fire djinn. Immediately upon transmuting, a being came to take Zell to the world of magic, for the djinn do not belong in the world of mortals. Having the gift of divination, Zell quickly forsees his life in the realm of magic being full of torment. Not being a natural born djinn would make Zell and outcast by his new kin in the magical realm and have no belonging there. Naturally, Zell fled before such events would unfold. The being angrily declares he, the Matadoya, keeper of the realms, swears to capture Zell and put him in his rightful place. The Matadoya, first appearing as a ram horned winged sphinx, shape shifts into new unrecognizable figures to attempt to catch Zell off guard; however, Zell is always one step ahead by being a an expert at divination.

In solitude Zell will drink yerba mate, write in his book of shadows, or scry in a Mayan crystal skull he stole from a temple. In public, he will entertain, gamble, flirt.
