Tournament Rules
Basics
- MTG Format: Commander
- Groupings: 4 players per pod.
- Time: 1 hour per round.
- Rounds: 2 rounds, random pairings.
No Proxies. All cards must be real.
Banned Cards: We use the normal Commander Banned List from Wizards of the Coast.
Scoring
Whenever a player does the indicated action: they are awarded the corresponding points:
- Defeating an opponent with 21+ Commander-damage: 3 Points.
- Defeating an opponent with any other form of combat damage: 2 Points.
- Defeating an opponent, or winning the game, with any other method: 1 Point.
- Defeating the final opponent, thus winning the game, is worth Double Points (i.e. +6pts or +4pts or +2pts).
Matchmaking
Tournament structure consists of 2 rounds of randomized matchmaking, followed by a third and final round of just the top-4 highest-scoring players.
Players accumulate points across multiple rounds. These points do not influence the second-round matchmaking (which is done randomly). Rounds are time-limited. For the third and final round: most players are eliminated, and the top-four players play one final match. Grand Prizes are awarded to the top 3 players according to their final cumulative scores.
Game Design Philosophy
In the game of MTG:Commander: your deck's Commander is supposed to represent YOU. This scoring system is designed to encourage players to fight with the honor and chivalry of a knight, by rewarding you for doing the MTG-equivalent of defeating your opponents in single-combat – killing with 21+ commander damage!
Look-The-Part Bonus
All participants who meet the look-the-part requirement will earn a single-use Trinket potion for each round they complete.
LTP Requirement:
(A) Cosplay as your Commander, as shown in the art on the card, and/or
(B) "Cosplay as your Deck"*
To "Cosplay As Your Deck": The colors of your deck must be prominently represented in the colors of your outfit:
No Scoops: Due to the kill-based scoring system: participants are asked not to "scoop" (quit a game early), because it denies other players the opportunity to score. Players who prematurely quit earn no look-the-part bonuses.
