This rule is outdated
V8 does not really define a spear anymore, you can still construct one using the rules for a Long or Great weapon. A Javelin may work as well.
Old Rules
Stabbing-only weapons at least five feet in length and must have "courtesy" padding on upper 1/3 of length. Spears should not be confused with javelins, which may be thrown. Spears are considered wooden for purposes of being targeted by spells or affecting monsters.
