Contrary to popular myth, Amtgard is NOT an acronym utilizing the first initials of all the original players of the game: ([[Aramithris]],[[M'Deth]], [[Tawnee]], [[Gilos]], [[Andralaine]], [[Rift]], [[Dustin]] or [[Delphos]] (depending on who you ask),who were not actually the first players nor were those their original names. NOR is "The word is essentially Norse/Icelandic in origin, and refers to a land between Midgard and Valhalla, a plain of existence for heroes who are more than human but still less than the 'gods'." true.

The word Amtgard was invented by Peter La Grue, Amt is german for "office" and gard is norse for "world". Welcome to OfficeWorld!

More certainly than not it was named after a friend of Peter LeGrue's, Mathew Amt, in an attempt to make amends for drama long since forgotten.

Here's a different story of the origin of the name, as told to Itsari by Sir Maniacles. (paraphrased to sound more mythical-like)

Back in the beginning times of Amtgard, before there was a name, there was only the sword. Upon the sword was a cover. The cover was but a mere tube sock. In these days, there was but one company which manufactured a tube sock, the length of which was appropriate for the covering of the sword. This company was AMT. Therefore, every sword had the letters AMT upon their cover. Combine this with the -gard to give it a nice, Norselandic feel, and thus is born the name: AMTgard.
