This page talks about page creation within the Main namespace. For instructions on other namespaces, see Categories, Templates, or Talk pages.

Before You Begin

Before anything can be put on AmtWiki about a subject, first a relevant page must be created. Anyone is able to create a page, but there are many things to consider before doing so:

  • Is there another page for this topic already? Sometimes pages are not titled exactly as you expect, so a proper search should be done before you make a new page, to prevent duplicate pages from existing.
  • Does this need its own page? Or does it just need to be a part of another page, or be a category instead.
  • Is this relevant to Amtgard? Pages that are not within the scope of Amtgard should not be placed on this Wiki. If you don't know if a page is within AmtWiki's scope, contact an admin.
  • Is this libelous? AmtWiki is not a dumping ground for unfounded accusations against persons or groups you disagree with. While AmtWiki has relaxed standards of what is allowed on pages compared to other wikis (inside jokes on your own player pages are allowed within reason), defacement of other people's pages will not be tolerated.
  • Do I have enough information about this topic? If you don't know enough about whatever page you are considering creating, hold off on making it until you do.

Creating a Page

There are three ways to create a page on AmtWiki:

Creating a Page from a Search

Search for the title of the new article. When the search finds nothing (or nothing with the exact title), click on the red link where it says "Create the page "Your Search Term" on this wiki!". It will take you to the blank page for the exact title that you searched, case specific.

Creating a Page from a Link

Links to non-existing pages are common throughout the wiki. Links to pages that do not yet exist are in red. To start a new page with the exact title of the link, click a link to the non-existing page.

Creating a Page from a URL

Pages on Amtwiki are displayed in the URL bar like so:

http://amtwiki.net/amtwiki/index.php/Page_Name_Here

Spaces in the page names are represented by underscores like "_". You can change the "Page_Name_Here" text of whichever page you are currently on to the page name you wish to create. This will bring you to a page with the title you desire, plus the following text:

There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, search the related logs, or '''edit this page'''.

You can either click on the "edit this page" text, or click on the "create" tab at the top of the page.

Editing the new page

AmtWiki, like other wikis, has its own set of easy-to-understand markup language called "wikitext". To learn more about editing pages, see the Editing section of the Help Tutorials.

Types of Pages

Editors are able to make pages about anything Amtgard-related. Some types of pages that you can create are explained below:

Player Pages

Each player can make a page for themselves, giving details about their history in the game and other relevant information. Each player is allowed one page, regardless how many role-playing personas they might have. To make a player page, select Player in the dropdown menu when creating a page. This will insert the Player Entry Template, the standard layout for player pages. Delete the top section after reading the instructions, and fill out the page.

Chapter Pages

New chapters usually have their page created by an admin when their contract is approved. If you need to make the page yourself, select Place in the dropdown menu when creating a page. Delete the top section after reading the instructions, and fill out the page.

To make a category that lists all members of your chapter, create a page entitled "Category: 'Your Chapter Name' People". Then, on each member's page, add [[Category: 'Your Chapter Name' People]].

Company and Household Pages

Organizations within Amtgard can make a page for their group. To make a Company or household page, select Household in the dropdown menu when creating a page. This will insert the Household Entry Template, the standard layout for organization pages. Delete the top section after reading the instructions, and fill out the page.

To make a category that lists all members of your group, create a page entitled "Category: 'Your Group Name' People". Then, on each member's page, add [[Category: 'Your Group Name' People]].

Chapter/Kingdom Monarchy Pages

You can make a page to keep track of the leadership history of your chapter. To do this, select Monarchy in the dropdown menu when creating a page. This will insert the Household Entry Template, the standard layout for organization pages. Delete the top section after reading the instructions, and fill out the page. This creates a table, which can be added to each reign, keeping a living history of your park's leadership.

Other Pages

Pages can be made for anything Amtgard-related. When creating a new page, try to add as much information as you can and keep it neatly organized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don't want a page for my Amtgard persona. Can you delete it?

A: We can, but there isn't a way to delete a page forever. As soon as a page is deleted, the title is up for grabs for the next person who wants to make a page with the same title. If you want to keep your persona page clear, talk to an admin. They can delete the information off of your page and protect it so no one can add information. We'll also add your page to the category "Do Not Want", so others are aware that your page is strictly off-limits.

Q: Can I change the title of my page?

A: You can change the title of a page by moving its contents to a page with a different title. At the top of the page, click on the move tab. Type in the name of the new page (make sure it is spelled correctly) in the "To new title" box. Give a reason for the page move in the "reason" box. If you do not have permission to move a page, contact an admin so they can move it for you.
