The Kingdom of the Emerald Hills grew out of an SCA group, the Incipient Shire of the Freehills, who were disenchanted with the way things were being done in the SCA. Around this time, Delphos had moved to the Dallas area from El Paso with the help of Nevron who had been living in the DFW area since the Fall of 84'. Delphos, looking to join the SCA in Dallas, instead met up with the people of the Freehills and showed them Amtgard.

The first official battle-game of the new group was held at Lakeside Park in Duncanville, Texas on March 26th 1988. This historic battle-game ended up between the fighting companys of Sable Pride vs. Wolfpack. From there, things moved very quickly as more and more people heard about this new group and came to see what it was all about. In June of 1988, Reyna and Rhys ap Gordon, two of the driving members of the Freehills, were crowned the first Queen and Prince Consort of the Emerald Hills, and Nevron won the first Champion Tourney.

The name "Emerald Hills" was coined by Delphos who, during the drive from El Paso, noticed the lush greeness of the area compared to El Paso and fit nicely with the already established Freehills. There are also, coincidentally enough, Some very nice green hills along I-20 just before you get to Duncanville (travelling West) where the seat of the kingdom is located.
