Our first fighting company to come from this group is known as "ppClan Akinishto]]." Clan Akinishto is a Role-Playing Fighting Company that permits its members to role-play their persona however they wish. Contrary to the common belief of those who have heard this name in past "Akinishto" is not Japanese, nor is it from any language currently in use or even in existence. It comes from a language that is of Zume Frostpaw and Sylver Snowlynx's creation. It translates to "A" meaning "of the", "Kin" meaning "Animal" and "Ishto" meaning "Warrior." This fighting company is comprised of only furry amtgardians.

History

Wildgard has been through a couple of re-namings since its consideration by Zume and Sylver. Originally it was going to be called Wild Spirits to honor both the fact that Winnipeg is at the doorstep of pure wilderness, Winnipeg was the central meeting place of three aboriginal tribes: Anishinabe (Ojibway), Cree, and Lakota (Sioux) and that 'Manito' of Manitoba.. or rather more correctly 'Manitou' means Spirit in both Cree and Ojibway. The name Wildgard was decided upon to represent a realm shared equally by humans and wild animals.

Stories From The Group Founders

Zume Frostpaw: Well let's see here.. when I was in my Junior year of High School, my interest in medieval combat and culture didn't go unnoticed. One of my friends approached me and told me he knew about my medieval interests and so offered for me to join him and a few other people at an Amtgard group in Stagecoach, Nevada. This group was not active nor did any participation count since there wasn't even any application in process. I had a look at the rulebook they had with them and decided immediately upon the Assassin class. It seemed very interesting and the fact that some of my favourite characters from video games or MMORPG's were Assassins or some form of Assassin such as a Ninja. I pulled an old black robe costume out of my closet from Halloween a couple years before and cut it up and threw together some makeshift Assassin garb for my first time participating in Amtgard. I was surprised to see that only one or two other people there actually bothered to garb up so I felt kinda out of place. As though I wasn't supposed to garb up but they reassured me and even said that they were impressed that I had made the effort. I had never fought with swords before whether they were real or fake so I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I went out and beat down their "Assassin Guild Master." It was fun and I was hooked.

Sylver Snowlynx: The first time I ever heard about Amtgard was from my friend at the time, Zume Frostpaw. I had been a fan of swords and all things Medieval for a long time, and action RPGs like Legend of Zelda were always my favorite, so I knew this warranted a look. On a business trip to Minnesota in August of 2010, I decided to take a chance and visit the Starmount Group at Como Park in St. Paul. Although I was a little nervous, they welcomed me with open arms, and in just one day I was hooked for good. I had a chance to play with Starmount and their sister park Mists of the Dawn in Apple Valley, MN, a couple more times. That was before our cross-country Amtgard trip in 2011, which sealed it for me...

The Trip That Shaped How Wildgard Would Be Created

In the Summer of 2011 both Sylver Snowlynx and myself (Zume Frostpaw) made a cross-country trip across the US and we made scheduled stops at several Amtgard chapters so that we could get a better handle on combat and the rules of Amtgard so we could start up Wildgard when we got back up to Winnipeg. We drove from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Silver Springs, Nevada. The first chapter on our list was the group close to my parent's home in Silver Springs and that was Fal Dare in Carson City, Nevada. We participated at Fal Dare for 4 weekends which were split in half with two on either side of a small trip to Berkeley, California where we participated at a group called Wyvern's Spur. The group in Carson City was very helpful and made such an amazing effort to help us out since we were there for so many events. Fal Dare struck us moreso as a fighting group than a role-playing group though, but we didn't mind at all. The constant action made it easier to make ourselves better accustomed to the rules of combat. The McKrotch household was a wonderful help and we will always be proud to call them our friends.

After we left Nevada to continue our cross-country trip, our next stop was in Louisville, Kentucky at a group called Madoc's Keep. This group seemed to do a little more role-playing than Fal Dare or Wyvern's Spur did but they also seemed to be heavily combat-oriented. They wasted no time in helping us with our combat techniques and introducing us to new and fun battlegames. It was brutally hot that day though, being 102 degrees fahrenheit in the shade not to mention the massively high humidity. But that did not stop us from having a blast and getting wood ticks attached to our legs during a class battle that we had in the forest right next to their fighting area. It was a nice break from the heat.

After visiting Madoc's Keep we ventured north to Boston, Massachusetts and decided to hit up the kingdom seat of Goldenvale in Nashua, New Hampshire. Unfortunately that day it was pouring outside so they had cancelled. We went back to our hotel, obviously disappointed. The next day we made the trek a bit further to Boreal Dale in Sanford, Maine. It was raining also that day but they were still there. The group was not planning on having any combat that day due to the rain. We told them that we were down from Canada, but being that close to the border their response was of course "Oh, okay." and a nod of the head. But when we told them exactly from where in Canada they got up and decided "Well if you travelled that far we might as well suck it up and fight for a while." At that point everyone got up, went out into the misting rain and had a fantastic time! It was amazing. Their group actually focused moreso on role-playing style of combat which was a nice break and we decided then and there - that was how we wanted to run our chapter when we started up. Great group of people and I so hope we can visit them again some day. The next weekend we ventured back up to Goldenvale and it was a beautiful day. Everyone got out and had a blast. Unfortunately that day was their scheduled Althing day. So we had to wait a while and just spar until everyone was ready but it was worth it. They were a lot of fun and a lot of help.

After that day Sylver and I made our drive back to Winnipeg. The trip was fun and very educational but I was glad it was over. Too long on the road. It was a wonderful experience. I hope to do a trip like that again some day and hopefully meet back up with all of our Amtgard friends from across the USA!

The above picture is from the chapter of North Haven in Glen Ellyn, Illinois whom we visited in mid August after our cross-country trip but during another visit to the US. They were the most helpful in getting our group ready to start up. One person in particular was Maramus. He has taken so much of his time to help us out and answer any question we had. He is the primary reason we are able to start up Wildgard in Spring of 2012.

And now for a fun pic of Maramus' vampire side trying to stake us. Quite ironic:

Wildgard meets in Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the extreme eastern portion next to Park Boulevard N. just south of the baseball diamonds. We meet on Sundays 1pm - 5(ish)pm Central Time. There is parking in the parking lot on the Formal Gardens Loop at the south-east entrance and along Nanton Boulevard (runs perpendicular to Park Blvd. N.). Our scheduled months are going to be (approximately) April-October/November due to the extreme temperature drop in the north. During the winter months we will go into hibernation. See you all on the field!
