MC

From AmtWiki

This article is about the Microcell Foam. For the person, see MC (Person).

What is MC?

Short for "Microcell" (a trade name), a type of polyethylene foam which is treated in an EVA process making the cell structures (little bubbles) highly uniform and considerably smaller... several orders of magnitude smaller than the usual 'closed cell' foam. While it takes more effort to construct a weapon out of MC than Funnoodle, adherents claim that MC swords have gone for many years of active use without needing repair.

MicroCell foam, "MC", is similar to the foam used in camp pad or funnoodle, but the individual bubbles are Much Much Smaller. "Microscopic" even. MC foam's cell structure is also more consistent than normal foam's. This results in pressure being more evenly spread through the foam leading to reduced cell failures. Because the bubbles are so much smaller, impacts are more evenly distributed, allowing the foam to last Much Longer. Furthermore, the loss of any one bubble is of little consequence.

Benefits

MC foam last far far longer than other foams. Several MC weapons over 5 years old are reported to still be in active use.

Problems

MC foam is more expensive, harder to come by (generally "mail order"), and heavier than noodle or camp pad.

MC foam is also a bit "stiffer", so weapons using it tend to hurt a bit.

Where can I get some?

  • It can ordered online.
    • Warning: Shipping foam is Quite Expensive.
  • It is often possible to find a local foam distributor, thus avoiding the shipping costs.
    • They'll often want to sell the foam in bulk, requiring several people to club up for one order.
  • Many of the swords at Warlord Sports are made with MC. You can get a finished MC sword for around $30.
  • Now if we can just get a Funnoodle out of MC, we can all die happy.
