Biography

Daire (daw-ra) is a druid who comes from a desert land on the other side of the world called Vasai. He learned the craft of druidism from a sage of his land. This sage, powerful beyond mortal means but with a past unknown, was called the Friend of Nature for his compassion with the wild and aptitude for healing the land. From the Friend, Daire learned of the wild’s united contradictions—of its softness and its brutality, of its beauty and its horror, of its calm peace and its tumultuous violence. Most important, Daire was taught to work diligently to balance the will of nature with the will of man with the will of God, even though each was ultimately unknown. Thus, at times Daire was nature’s servant and healed the earth wildly, even recklessly, while at others he forced it back. And, understanding nature’s chaotic violence, Daire was willing to harness its power into brute force, although usually cautious in doing so. At heart, he always was, and still is, a healer of all things.

Daire’s daughter was two years old when she and her mother were murdered by the crazed sage. None knew what drove the Friend to that terrible murder, for the sage did not live long enough for anybody to ask—raging at the loss of his loves, Daire focused nature’s brute force on the old being, heedless of the consequences.

Travelers through Westmarch report that, on that day, the scream of rage that Daire let loose shook the desert country. The wild forces that he unleashed tore a bleeding fissure through Vasai, destroying his own village along with several others, a revered oasis of that harsh land, and presumably the Friend of Nature, who has not been seen since.

Daire was left drained of almost all of the power he had—both to heal and destroy. For a time, he wandered the region, slowly healing what he could of the wound his rage had created. While many were angry, none dared confront him after what he had done to the sage. The scar remains to this day, but scrub grows over it now, scorpions skitter through its sands, the oasis waterhole slowly grows, and the few villagers remaining rebuild their homes and lives. After he had healed what it was within his power to, Daire wandered for many months.

When he was rescued by soldiers of the Crimson Sanctum, Daire swore to travel with and protect them until he had repaid his debt. When exactly his debt will be repaid is unknown, but Daire takes his promises seriously. While still weakened after his rage, he slowly regains his powers over the wild things of the world.

He is a quiet and moody fellow, as well of something of a loner. He is at most times content, at some times joyous, and occasionally cranky. But there is always a sense of sadness to him. Tears are shed but sparsely, yet the weight of his loss and the loss he has caused is always upon him. While he generally keeps his heart to himself, he is fond of his companions, and shows it through his dry sarcasm with them and a very apparent sense of protectiveness about them.
