From The Stick Jock’s Dictionary - Line fighting: Occurs in large melees when static formations of fighters literally line up against one another. As a result there is very little lateral movement and almost no mobility. It is therefore very easy to be killed by someone you are not directly engaging. Reach weapons such as Howitzers and polearms are very effective in such an environment. In full class or militia battles armor also plays a large role. As a result many elite fighters avoid line fighting when ever possible and concentrate on Flanking.
