Catchers shin guards (popularly called Mechs) are often used for leg protection because they provide protection for both the knees and shins. You can buy these used at sporting good stores, both new and secondhand. They are sold by shin length, 14" usually branded as Youth, 16" as Women's, and 17" as Men's.
