”Without A/S, Amtgard cannot be as deeply rooted in it's fantasy heritage. It is a fundamental part of Amtgard, and what makes it different from sports like SCA."

Biography

In the summer of 2007, Huggybaer The Mad, then known as James, happened to be fishing in a local park when a strange sight caught his eye. A group of warriors fought in deadly battle on a grassy hill in the distance. Drawn to the sight, he spoke to one of the combatants, and was offered a position in the battle. James agreed to take up arms, but is quoted as having said "But I'm never going to garb up like you nerds"

3 weeks later, James showed up inside what was believed to be the armour of a freshly slain Viking. He had, as he once put it, "Garbed up like you nerds" unfortunately, his weapon of choice was likely the cause of death of the poor Norseman. In his last act as James, the man that walked onto the battlefield that day had attempted to craft an amtgard legal tonfa, despite having never heard of pool noodle before in his life. This may have been the most dangerous weapon to try to touch Crimson Circle's field in all it's long history.

Due to this incident and many other "mad" moments, Huggybaer is often looked down upon in Amtgard, but even in those early days, there was one person in the park who, to Huggybaer, was the best friend that one could ask for. Dillon turned what could have been a disappointed spectator into Huggybaer the Mad, local mad siege engineer, devious archer, and master bard.

In the years since joining Amtgard, Huggybaer the Mad has built no less than two fully-functional historical siege weapons. The first was a french trebuchet deemed well built but poorly suited to the sport. The latter, however, was a functional tortion catapult that was fielded at MAME 2014, where it was slain, along with the crew.

In addition, Huggybaer has constructed many a piece of armour, garb, or weapon for competition, his own use, and the aid of new players. He does this to inspire what he calls "Noobie Fire" which he describes as the drive new players experience in their first year or two of Amtgard, where they are first learning the sport, and it's experiences have the largest influence on them. He considers new players the future of Amtgard.

Unfortunately, Huggybaer's own ability to fight was critically damaged due to an unpadded polearm shaft colliding with him, detaching his left retina. He has little to no vision on that side of his body. This has not left him completely defenceless on the battlefield, but it is a serious weakness.

Huggybaer the Mad's contributions to the Arts and Sciences cannot be measured even in his many owls, however, he would contend that it is the Arts and Science's contributions to Amtgard that are more important.
