The Kingdom of the Emerald Hills grew out of a group of SCAdians, the Incipient Shire of the Freehills, who were disenchanted with the way things were being done in the SCA. Around this time, Delphos and Nevron had moved to the Dallas area from El Paso. Delphos, looking to join the SCA in Dallas, met with the people of the Freehills and showed them Amtgard.

In June of 1988, Reyna and Rhys, some of the driving members of the Freehills, were crowned the first Queen and Prince Consort of the Emerald Hills.
