History

Archaea was a LARP founded in 1992 and based in the New England area with an offshoot in Colorado in 2003. The game advertises over 50 different character skills and over 250 magic spells, and also sports a complex role-play story history spanning 4000 years.

Rules

The combat rules are similar, however much more complicated. Some areas may or may not be based on amtgard or similar rules, however there are many unique aspects apparent in the edited online rules.

Comparison

-There are 4 levels of weapons which loosely translate to amtgard damage - light (blue), critical, mortal (red) and death (white). Unlike amtgard, weapons do one less damage when thrusting. Unlike amtgard, light weapon strikes are legal to the head.

-The wounding system is much more complicated; a light wound does not cause one to cease to function immediately, but will progress to a more serious wound over time determined by the elder, which is similar to a reeve. A player is allowed several hits before death, even to the torso.

-The archery rules are a near clone to amtgard archery. 35 pound draw limits, half draw within 20 feet, wooden arrows require tape, deal critical (2-3 points) damage, etc.

-Armor is rated on a scale of 1 to 12 on it's ability to stop blows. The categories are somewhat similar, but have several additions including splint mail.

-Characters create a persona on paper, and permanant character death is possible.

-There are no less than 15 colors for spell balls or other magic effects, including animal print and plaid. The magic system is intense to say the least, and many of the spells appear role-play based rather than actual combat.

-Your character recieves skills, much like in DnD including such things as animal lore, forgery, and feat of strength.
