You may ask how someone of my background would end up as a scholar. I admit that it is unusual for someone trained in martial arts and working as a warrior to take a vow of nonviolence. Here is how it happened:
In my past, I trained with two military master warriors in the fighting arts of Tai Chi and Karate. I also traveled into Asia in pursuit of further knowledge. These skills served me well during drills at Campus Martius along the Tiber River and during battle. The pinnacle of my training at the budo was when one of the master warriors stated, “You are a dangerous woman.”
All was going well and I was gaining advancement in my skill level and honors until the battle at Lethe. The night before the melee, my comrades in arms and I were meditating over the meaning of life and the universal value of saki over mead. The debate lasted long into the night. I fell into a sound stupor and received a portent in the form of a dream. Upon awakening back into consciousness, I could not remember any part of the dream except a feeling of isolation and discontent.
During the battle the feeling remained and worsened. At one point I completely blacked out and have no memory of what occurred. When my humors realigned, I became aware again. I was alone on the battlefield and surrounded by dead bodies, some of which were my comrades from the night before. I realized that I had gone berserk and slaughtered friend and alike. At that point, I fell to my knees and took a vow to God that I would never fight again save in self-defense. I left my sword planted in the ground as a cross for that place of death.
I then applied to the university as a student and was accepted once I turned over most of my military wages. My course of study was the trivium which consists of grammar, rhetoric, and logic. It was at the university that I learned the name of the dreaded scourge that had befallen me on that dark day of battle. I had Psyche Melancholy Spiritus, a reoccurring condition with varying severity of symptoms. This reaffirmed and strengthened my vow to avoid battle because it would very likely happen again.
I excelled in my studies. After my degree was conferred, I became a master and taught at the university. After several years, I began to find the upheaval of the student associations irritating and life at the university became boring. Currently, I am taking a sabbatical from teaching to live in the freehold of Autumn Grove. The citizens of the freehold recently bestowed on me the title Monarch of Autumn Grove.
My first challenge as the monarch of the area was the temptation of breaking my vow when a group of bandits took over an abandoned tower in the area. Thanks to divine intervention, I was able to remain true to my oath when a traveling monk came into the area. He designed and built a catapult which breached the walls. The bandits took to their heels when faced with this advanced Machina aux Deus.
