His Grace, Chancellor Liam Tallory, of Serpent's Hollow in the Rising Winds
”Now I plan to work out a muscle you aren't used to using... your brain.”
Biography
Liam Tallory was born in a small cottage by the sea in Bail Beag, Ireland. His parents were overcome by a sickness when he was yet an infant, yet somehow his grandmother and he never contracted it. Once the illness overtook them, his grandmother took the task of raising the baby herself, lulling him to sleep each night with a lullaby she played on her ocarina. Already quite old by the time she started raising the boy, she knew she would not be alive to see Liam reach manhood. Because of this, as soon as he was able to learn, she tried to teach him how to manage on his own the best she could. Fearing she would die before he could hold his own, she finally introduced him to the son of her now deceased older brother, a man by the name of Aedan Carney.
Mr. Carney was a man who was infamous for his underhanded ways, and he taught Liam to charm and manipulate, steal, and fight. This led to Liam’s development of minor prowess in thievery, as well as skill with the staff. Unsettled by the means she had to take to insure the boy’s survival, his grandmother attempted to curb his sense of chaos through teaching him the soothing art of music. While this had very little of its intended effect, it did cause a spark in Liam’s mind which made him thirst for higher knowledge in the musical arts. This bred a thirst for knowledge of mystical arts through music, then all mystical arts, and finally knowledge in general.
Liam became quite a prodigy of the ocarina, and when he was 13 and his grandmother was on her deathbed, she passed down her only possession of worth to him, her ocarina. With no remaining family but Aedan Carney, who he now saw as nothing more than a common thug, Liam packed up what little he had and traveled southeast across the Irish Sea into England, then across the English Channel into France. He settled there for a time, taking in the many texts he found there, and learning how to fence. He soon found himself a fan of the rapier and main gauche combination, tweaking it to fit his style by adapting it to a shortsword and curved knife combination.
While here, he came across a scroll from the Far East, a land called Engoku. It spoke of a paper-folding art called origami, and a mystical enchantment which allowed the artist to breath life into his creations. He learned this technique, creating his very first Shikigami. He added this trick to his repertoire, alongside the previously gained ability to summon forth fairies, or fae as he preferred to call them. Finding the scenery of France growing stale and the well of knowledge running dry, he set out for another civilization known for its arts and innovation: Greece.
While on his journey to Athens, which he heard to be an epicenter for learning in Greece, he came across a man from Ithaca, just back from the Trojan War. The man was filled with hate and a thirst for vengeance, and planned to create a kingdom of the most skilled warriors he could collect and breed for the sake of his revenge. In exchange for his help in this matter, the man offered Liam a position of power and a place to hone his skills in a way that his steel, wood, and magical melodies could intertwine with a deadly efficient harmony. Thus did Liam find himself the first citizen of the shire of Serpent's Hollow, under Sheriff Verial Zarendian.
In his early days as a citizen of Greece, he got acquainted with the pantheon of gods in this new land through texts in the libraries of Athens, to which he often traveled. He quickly grew interested in Hermes, god of travelers and cunning thieves, oraters and wit, and literature and poets, among other things. Easily and without regret, he tossed away the feeble ties he once had with the Irish Catholic Church, and made a new faith with the Greek pantheon, Hermes especially.
