Newbie Foo is what veteran fighters usually call the way most brand new people fight, or when some chance luck shot manages to sneak in their guard. While vet fighters love newbies, and always want Amtgard to grow, succumbing to Newbie Foo can be a frustrating experience.
Don't forget that we were all newbies once. As long as you keep learning and stay safe, that's what's important!
Common types of Newbie Foo
- The Wiggle
- The practitioner will thrust, miss, and wiggle his swords around trying to score a hit. This technique is Illegal as of 7.x
- The Pose
- Where a newbie will strike a ninja pose before being struck by their opponent.
- "I used to fence!"
- The user of this strategy attempts to bring their knowledge of fencing into the game of Amtgard. They usually are unable to successfully do so.
- The Windmill or The Blackhawk
- The user of this move rotates both of their swords in a circle like a windmill or blackhawk helicopter, attempting to confuse their opponent. Is a palid substitute for being able to block. Not to be confused with Sir Blackhawk, who is completely unconnected to this move.
- The Late Stab
- The user of this move attempts to stab their opponent, pushing through after they are blocked, and still trying to connect after receiving enough arm shots to kill an 8:1 Monster.
- The Bull or Head Down, Double Facial Thrust (HDDFT)
- The user puts their head down and just charges in! Usually results in broken glasses for both parties.
- Killing the invisible man between us
- This is where a nervous Newbie swings their sword at the space in between you and him.
- Invishield
- When newbies, intentionally or otherwise, refuse to take forearm shots.
- Fall Foo
- This newbie is so into Amtgard that he falls on his face half the time as he is fighting. Is not Fall Foo if they don't keep fighting when on the ground.
- Twin Longs
- The preferred weapon combination of a Newbie Foo specialist.
- Basebal swinging or Swing for the fences
- An uncontrolled, wild swing with a weapon exerting much more force than necessary. This dangerous action is highly discouraged as it can lead to shots to the face, as well as bodily injury.
- Sweep under the table
- When a new person uses a shield instead of Twin Longs, they sometimes table their shield and sweep for the legs. Usually, sight is obscured for both parties involved.
- Feign Death
- The practitioner of this vile act pretends to be dead, or acts like he is currently not involved in whatever game is going on at the moment. When the hapless stick walks past, he is ambushed from behind.
- Ninja with Mission
- Avoiding combat by "Stealthily" sneaking through the sidelines, using dead, Reeves, or Color as cover.
- The Slow Blade Penetrates the Shield or The Broken Clock
- moving so slowly and awkwardly a more experienced fighter does not expect their weapon to still be in a certain location, opening themselves up as an easy target for the slow blade. It's how some newbies get their hits in!
- Newbie Stab
- In which a new player will stab from a god-awful angle, effectively confusing more experienced players and sometimes, killing them. Usually accompanied with The Pose.
