Character Biography

Yoritomo Han Soro was the second son of the daimyo of the Yoritomo family. He was a second son of a minor clan, as such he was arranged to marry a minor noble of the Doji family in order to solidify unity between the Mantis and the Crane. Han did not like his prospective wife because she talked too much about art, calligraphy, and how her family descended from the Kami’s, and about how great their family was, and blah, blah, blah. On his way to Crane lands he spent winter court in the Wasp Lands. During this time he met Reia, the daughter of the Wasp daimyo. They hit it off instantly and began courting one another. Han knowing that his duty was to marry a Doji bitch decided that he was not going to lose Reia. He asked the Wasp daimyo for the right to marry his daughter, who of course was taken aback since he knew Han was to marry a Doji. Han assured the daimyo that he would obtain permission to marry his daughter if he gave permission. The daimyo assented and Han took a ship and sailed for the Mantis islands. Han confronted his father and told him he would not marry the Doji and his father persisted in telling him that he was they daimyo of the clan and he would not throw away a chance to strengthen relations with the Crane over a little obsession of Han’s. The daimyo finally smiled and said, “If you can prove your love of her to me, then I will allow you to wed. Outside the wall in Crab lands remains a statue of one Crab fighting off Oni as his wife stands behind him defiantly firing arrows at the evil Oni. This statue is the Crab’s only monument to love, a man fighting the Oni back with every last breath of his life to save his wife, and his wife, unwilling to see his sacrifice go unheeded stays to fight, standing side by side till the end. Go to this statue and get a rubbing of the words at the bottom and bring it back to me, and I shall allow your wedding.” Han wrote a beautiful Haiku to Reia in hopes of making her understand why he was doing this. He went into Crab lands and asked for permission to enter the shadowlands. Everyone in the court laughed at him, except one. The daimyo looked him in the eyes and asked him simply, “do you love her?” Han’s eyes fixed on the daimyo’s and said ‘More than life itself’ and with that the daimyo ordered the court to give him a map of where the ruins had last been and asked for volunteers from the court to escort him. Only one volunteer came forward. As is the case with most Crabs this man was very large, over 6 and a half feet tall and weighing almost 300 pounds. He was a hairy man who carried a foreign style ranged weapon on his back (crossbow). He growled to the court. “I will follow this man and reclaim the statue for our people.” He illustrated the point with a club and the rest of the court knew that once they found it, it would be destroyed so it could no longer be defiled by the Oni. They began their trek into the shadowlands and they encountered many creatures and they fought valiantly. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. They fought hard and rarely slept, they kept moving deeper and deeper into the conquered lands going back and forth attempting to find the statue. After two months the Crabs sent a letter to the Mantis clan daimyo expressing their condolences that his son had been lost in the shadowlands. The Mantis Daimyo then sent a letter to Reia and informed her that Han Soro had died. In her grief Reia attempted suicide, but failed. Her father forced her to get over Han by forcing her to marry a Daidoji noble. She never loved the Daidoji, but performed her duties as a wife. Although she secretly killed three children she would have had with the Daidoji. One year and four months after leaving the Crab wall, Han Soro and Choo rac ra stumbled towards the wall once again. Han Soro was in Choo rac ra’s arms and clutched in Han’s hands was the plaque of the statue. After a few days of being nursed to health, Han presented himself to the court of the Crab with the plaque. “This belongs to you.” He laid the plaque at the feet of the Crab Daimyo. “I only ask that you allow me to make a shaving of it before I leave.” The Crab daimyo looked at the man and a tear ran down his face. “The woman you sought has been married to a Daidoji. We did not believe you could survive in the Shadowlands for that long. I am sorry. Take the plaque, for you have earned it. You have shown that it is possible for a person to love someone as much as we love the empire.” Han bowed and announced, “I will show her this and she will come to me.” The Crab daimyo cried out “Give this man an honor guard, he is going to reclaim his true love!” “No! I shall do this on my own.” At this point Choo rac ra stepped up and demanded he be allowed to go. The two of them travelled to Crossroads Castle where they discovered the Minor Noble lived. They walked into the court and presented themselves. Han strode up to the castle daimyo and laid the plaque at his feet and said, “With this plaque I have come to clam my wife.” “You have come to lay claim to that which is not yours,” came a voice from the back of the room, “She is my wife and you cannot have her.” “Why do you not let her decide? Or are you afraid of what she will say?” Reia steps forward into the court and bows respectfully before the daimyo and her husband. She walks forward into the room and looks around. “Hmmm… whom shall have my heart? A noble?” Her hand moves gently over her husband’s cheek, then she strides over to Han, “or a scruffy looking goat-herder?” The court erupted into laughter until she grabbed Han by the waist and gave him a passionate kiss. “I always did like goats.” The noble was outraged and demanded a right to dual Han for his wife. Han agreed and said now was the time to settle the dispute. The dual was over with one strike from Han as the noble slumped to the floor. “I have claimed my true love and I am leaving now. All who wish to end up like him,” he points to the dead body on the floor, “feel free to follow me and attempt to keep me from marrying her.” The three of them move out of the court and then Daidoji orders them not to get out of the castle. Han and Choo rac ra moved quickly towards the stables and got three horses for themselves and Reia, they mounted and they made a run for it. They could see through a hail of arrows that the gate was down and Han yelled to his ancestor Oswana Wo to strike the door down in the name of true love so they could escape. At that very moment a bolt from the sky came down and shattered the gate of Crossroads Castle. As they rode past the gates Choo rac ra was dehorsed. Han leaped off his horse and single-handedly fought off the Crane until Reia came back with the horses. Reia took over fighting while Han placed Choo rac ra on his horse and started him moving. Finally they escaped. They arrived at Wasp lands and were married immediately. The Wasp daimyo was so impressed with Han that he offered him a position controlling one of his archery units. Han politely declined due to his lack of experience with that particular weapon. They left Wasp lands and went to Crab lands where he presented himself and his new wife. The Crab daimyo was happy and he was honored with a banquet in his honour. At the banquet Choo rac ra stood up and said that he is officially taking the position of Han Soro’s yo-jimbo because he was friends with him, and he owed him his life. They went back to the Mantis Islands where they lived happily doing the bidding of their daiymo. They gave birth to one son, Yoritomo Obi wan, and to this day the plaque sits in the family home reminding the family that honor and duty is important, but not as important as true love.
